Day 241

My hair after 11 days without shampoo. Still clean and fluffy thanks to some baking soda to remove the excess oil.

After doing a lot of reading on the subject, I’ve decided to give “no poo” a try. “No poo” refers to no longer using shampoo in your hair. You just shower or bathe as normal, giving your hair a good rinse, and that’s it. Your scalp produces a ton of oils to make up for the stripping effect the shampoo has on your scalp and hair. From what I read, I should expect to have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for my scalp to realize it doesn’t need to be pumping out oils and after that I should see some changes for the better. People have reported smoother hair with better curl, no need for a conditioner, and of course saving money on shampoo and conditioner because you don’t need to buy it anymore. Why am I going to do this? Two reasons. 1) I barely use any shampoo as it is- I generally only wash my hair once or maybe twice a week. 2) I’ve also been reading of a lot of people who have psoriasis on their scalp talk about huge improvements in the condition after a few months. I’ve not had whatever is going on in isolated spots of my body and on much of my scalp diagnosed as such, but research has led me to believe that’s what it is. And in summertime, its almost unbearable on my scalp. Right about now I’d do anything to try and improve the issue.

The last time I shampooed my hair was June 1st. I washed it as normal, conditioned, and that was that. I gave it a good rinse this afternoon, working a paste of baking soda and water into the roots to absorb most of the excess oils so they could easily be rinsed away, and it actually seemed to have worked quite well. The only downside to doing this is it made it very hard to get a brush through afterwards. Still, the baking soda shouldn’t be needed at all in a few more few more weeks. Yes, it will get oily between baking soda treatments, but I have no issue with ponytails on “dirty” days.

Food was not so bad today. And by not so bad, I mean an entire world better than it was yesterday. Again, I’m guessing at the nutritional info because the food we got last night doesn’t have it posted on their website, but I think I came in somewhere near where I wanted to be today. And if I’m a little over, well, still better than yesterday. Here’s today’s eats.

Hmm, that interesting about not washing your hair. I have to wash my hair everyday or it gets so oily and dirty looking. But what you say makes sense.

  • Very interesting!! Your hair looks lighter, fuller. Does it seem that way to you?

I didn’t know about the baking soda and then I saw something about using it to clean hair on TV just yesterday.

Keep us posted on how this is working out. :D

  • I forgot to tell you…..

I haven’t received any checks yet but one survey company has sent me to free huge boxes of cereal. LOL!! (Waiting for the checks to start rolling in. I take about 2 surveys a day.)

Cee, mine did too, but the baking soda cleared that right up. It was a little dry feeling the day I did the baking soda, but today, two days later, it feels fantastic!

Donna, the baking soda treatment made it a little staticky and super fluffy. Today it looks much more normal, but feels wonderful. hehe Cool! Free food is always nice, assuming its something you’ll actually eat!
